LIFE+ for Nature and Environmental projects


Are you investing in an innovative technology with high environmental benefits? Or are you investing in a nature conservation project? With a budget of €2.143 billion (up until 2013), LIFE + is Europe’s key funding instrument to support such projects. Funding is typically 50% of eligible costs. There is no fixed minimum size for project budgets, but historically the average grant awarded has been in excess of 1.5 million Euro.

Summary of LIFE +


LIFE + is Europe’s key funding instrument to support projects that contribute to the development and implementation of Community environmental policy and legislation. On March 13, this scheme reopened. This grant program has three pillars:
  • LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity
    • LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity supports best practice or demonstration projects in nature conservation. More specifically, Life+ provides co-finances conservation measures for species and/or habitat types that are covered by the relevant annexes of the Habitats or Birds Directive.

  • LIFE + Environment Policy and Governance
    • LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance supports pilot and demonstration projects that showcase the environmental benefits in Europe of an innovative technology, method or approach. Life+ focuses on environmental policy areas, like reducing the emissions of greenhouse gasses, improving water quality, noise reduction and improving resource efficiency.

  • LIFE + Information and Communication
    • LIFE + Information and Communication aims at supporting communication and awareness raising campaigns informing stakeholders about European environmental policy, legislation and best practices.
