Exceptional Project Grant

Developing a New Technology that is Strategically Important to an Industry or Sector

Available in certain regional development agencies are the exceptional research or exceptional development grants. These grants are for projects developing a new technology, product or prcosee that is strategically important to an industry sector. These types of project will have a major effect on the overall performance of an industry (and preferably across industrial sectors) in respect of the way it works, increasing its productivity or its sustainable development. Projects are likely to have a significant impact on the UK’s competitive position and/or be critical to addressing major social or environmental challenges.


Exceptional Development projects can last from 6 - 36 months and these grants are available to any SME (having less than 250 employees and either less than €50m sales or less than €43m of asset value). The grant contribution is 40% for small businesses and 35% for medium businesses, with a maximum project grant of up to £500,000.

Exceptional Research projects can also last from 6 - 36 months and these grants are available to any micro and small businesses SME (having less than 550 employees and either less than €10m sales or less than €10m of asset value). The grant contribution is up to 60% for small businesses and 35% for large businesses, with a minimum grant of £100,000 and a maximum grant of up to £250,000.

  • Will incur higher than normal costs
  • Higher degree of risk than normal R&D projects
  • Longer lead times to market
  • Often, but not necessarily, in the Low Carbon or Bioscience sectors
