BUILDINTEREST

Investments in sustainable energy and energy efficiency are currently sub-optimal, forming an important bottleneck for Europe to reach its 20-20-20 targets. Particularly in the built environment, projects require high upfront investments, have high perceived risk, have to deal with complex planning and stakeholder issues, and suffer from split incentives. BUILDINTEREST brings together stakeholders from the financial and building sector and helps to develop tools and financial instruments to increase investment in sustainable buildings. PNO was the initiator behind the BUILDINTEREST project.

About the project

The main aim of BUILDINTEREST is to structurally reduce uncertainty and increase trust in investments in sustainable energy in buildings. This is achieved mainly through reinforcement of investors’ trust in sustainable energy and energy efficiency projects, and by creation of a structural, long-term dialogue between public policies, investors and innovative companies.

Within the project, three national financing platforms are developed: Green BuildInvest Initiative in The Netherlands, BUILD-LAB in Italy, and EuroQuity in France. These platforms have connected the building and financial sector in each country, and are working with their national stakeholders to increase the attractiveness of investments in sustainable energy in buildings.

The main barriers and opportunities to increase investments in sustainable buildings in each country—and hence the main focal points of the national financing platforms—have been described in a roadmap, which is available from the project’s website. The roadmap presents a practical approach to the implementation of each country’s key solutions. The implementation of these solutions by the building and financial sector will be facilitated by the national platforms, which will continue to support the market even after the end of the project.

Finally, BUILDINTEREST marks the start of a European community, aimed at an exchange of practical knowledge and solutions on investment in sustainable buildings to other European countries.

Our involvement

As an organisation that connects stakeholders from different backgrounds and sectors on a regular basis, PNO was the initiator behind the BUILDINTEREST project. PNO is also the project’s coordinator, ensuring that the three national financing platforms work together to exchange knowledge and experience as much as possible. In addition, PNO is the main author of the project’s roadmap, outlining practical solutions to increase investment in sustainable buildings. Finally, PNO operates the European community website.

Buildinterest operates within the circle of financiers, building demand and building supply.
