AlSiCal

The AlSiCal project aims at developing an innovative technology to reduce the environmental impact of producing alumina, silica and calcium carbonate by using alternative mineral resources.

 

AlSiCal | Background

The world is currently facing critical technological and environmental challenges in the production of raw materials. At an economic and political level, securing domestic access to basic raw materials is of high priority. But in a highly competitive, growing market and rapidly changing global context, there is a pressing need for new sustainable technologies to obtain them. This not only at European level but also worldwide.

Alumina, silica and calcium carbonate are high-demand raw materials with expected demand growth worldwide. These raw materials are currently obtained through traditional processes that generate large CO2 emissions, and bauxite residue in the case of alumina production from bauxite by the Bayer process. To meet the need of being more sustainable, their production needs to evolve and become more environmentally friendly.

AlSical offers a new ground-breaking, clean and safe technological solution that will secure a European sustainable production of these raw materials whilst minimizing environmental impact.

AlSiCal | The project

AlSiCal will de-risk and develop from TRL 3 to TRL 5 the Aranda-Mastin technology under sustainability and efficiency principles. It will assess and quantify the techno-economic feasibility, the potential value creation for Europe, as well as the impact and risks of this technology upon three key sustainability pillars: economy, society and environment.

AlSiCal will also set a roadmap for exploitation of the project results, to foster the later commercialization of the technology. Targeted dissemination and communication actions will contribute to increasing social and industrial engagement for developing innovative sustainable technologies for mineral processing.

AlSiCal will be performed by a balanced team of R&D and industrial partners representing the whole value chain.
