Circular Economy for SMEs – Innovating with NICER Round 2

Apply for a share of £1.5Mn funding from the UKRI National Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Research programme (NICER) for collaborative circular economy innovation projects that will address the challenges of transitioning to a circular economy and create a step-change in the adoption of circular economy approaches. Project start date & duration: by 01 May 2023; between 12 and 18 months

Scope

  • Circular economy approaches (repair; reuse; remanufacture; recycle; regeneration) are in scope
  • Projects that focus on retaining the maximum amount of value in a product or system are encouraged
  • Projects with direct or indirect commercial outcomes for the partners will be funded
  • A portfolio of projects, across the range of resource flows and topics covered by the Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres and Hub and types of projects will be funded.
  • Applicants must consider the benefits, risks, costs and trade-offs associated with adopting a more circular approach.

Specific Themes

Projects must align with the NICER programme and be supported by a NICER centre or the CE-hub.

Resource flows covered by the Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres:

  • chemicals (specifically Olefins)
  • bio-textiles
  • metals (steel and aluminium)
  • technology metals
  • mineral-based construction materials

Themes covered by the CE-hub:

  • cross cutting research to accelerate the transition
  • data, modelling and measuring impact
  • knowledge sharing
  • roadmapping

Eligibility

  • Subsidy Control and EC State Aid funding rules apply
  • Project must be led by a UK business, of any size, and collaborators must be UK based organisations
  • R&D work must be carried out in the UK and project results exploited from UK
  • Subcontractors are allowed, preferably UK-based, with appropriate and justified costs
  • Applications must include a letter of support from at least one of the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres or the NICER CE hub

Funding Rates

  • Total eligible project costs between £100,000 and £150,000 (£1.5 million pot)

For Feasibility Studies or Industrial Research you could get funding for your eligible project costs of:

  • up to 70% if you are a micro or small organisation
  • up to 60% if you are a medium-sized organisation
  • up to 50% if you are a large organisation

For Experimental Development you could get funding for your eligible project costs of:

  • up to 45% if you are a micro or small organisation
  • up to 35% if you are a medium-sized organisation
  • up to 25% if you are a large organisation

Research organisations in your consortium can share up to 30% of the UK total eligible project costs.
