Clean Maritime Demonstration

Scope

Your project must design, develop and test novel clean maritime or smart shipping technologies that reduce greenhouse emissions from vessels and/or shore-side infrastructure at ports and harbours.

Specific Themes

  • On-vessel low and zero emission technologies
  • Port and shore-side solutions
  • Smart shipping technologies

Projects that will not be funded

  • focus only on increasing the efficiency of current conventional fossil fuels and powertrains of maritime vessels
  • are involving aqua-culture or focus on marine conservation and ecology
  • are investigating the feasibility of financial products, including green finance
  • are focused on biofuels, except for projects strictly focused on inland waterway vessels
  • are focused on nuclear propulsion

Eligibility

  • Subsidy Control and State aid funding rules apply.
  • Projects can be single applicant or collaborative. To lead a project or work alone, you must be a UK registered business of any size, a research organisation or a research and technology organisation (RTO)
  • Academic institutions cannot work alone and if the lead organisation is an RTO or a research organisation, it must collaborate with at least 1 business.
  • Your total capital grant funding request must not exceed 50% of your total eligible capital costs.

Funding Rates

  • Strand 1 – Feasibility Studies: Total eligible project costs between £25,000 and £1,000,000 (£10M pot).
  • Strand 2 – Industrial Research / Experimental development: Total eligible project costs between £100,000 and £4,000,000 (£10M pot)

Funding rates are dependent on company size and project maturity as follows:

Feasibility studies (TRL 2-3)

  • Micro/small business <70%
  • Medium sized business <60%
  • Large business <50%

Industrial research (TRL 3-5)

  • Micro/small business <70%
  • Medium sized business <60%
  • Large business <50%

Experimental development (TRL 6-7) 

  • Micro/small business <45%
  • Medium sized business <35%
  • Large business <25%

Research organisations in your consortium can share up to 50% of the UK total eligible project costs.
