This competition is split into 2 strands:
- Critical materials for magnets: Strand 1, early-stage feasibility studies that will enable the adoption of new innovations in processes or technologies by industry that enable a more resilient UK supply chain for rare earth elements (REE)
- Critical materials for magnets: Strand 2, mid and late-stage R&D projects that accelerate the industrialisation and commercialisation of innovative processes and technologies that enable a more resilient UK supply chain for REE.
Dates:
Competition closes: 21 June 2023, 11am
Applicants notified: 21 July 2023
Start date & duration (Strand 1: Feasibility Project): October 2023 for up to 12 months.
Start date & duration (Strand 2: Mid & Late-stage Project): October 2023 for up to 18 months.
Scope:
Your project must be focused on rare earth elements (REE) or new and alternative materials for permanent magnets. REEs are defined as the group of seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, the fifteen Lanthanides plus Scandium and Yttrium.
Specific Themes:
Your project can cover one, or more of the following areas:
- Mining and up-stream
- Mid-stream
- Down-stream and magnet manufacture
- Circular supply chains
- New and alternative materials
Projects that will not be funded
- that do not focus on the materials supply chain, either primary or secondary
- designing new magnet-free electric motors
- that are developing existing non-magnet products
- not focused on REE or a materials substitution
- addressing extending the life of magnet containing products
Eligibility
- This competition provides funding in line with the Subsidy Control Act 2022.
- This competition is open to collaborations only.
- To lead a project your organisation must be a UK registered business of any size.
- To be an eligible collaboration the lead and at least one other organisation must claim grant.
- R&D work must be carried out in the UK and project results exploited from UK.
Funding Rates
- Total eligible project costs: £500,000 Strand1 and up to £1,000,000 Strand 2 (£5M pot).
For Feasibility Studies or Industrial Research you could get funding for your eligible project costs of:
- up to 70% if you are a micro or small organisation
- up to 60% if you are a medium-sized organisation
- up to 50% if you are a large organisation
For Experimental Development you could get funding for your eligible project costs of:
- up to 45% if you are a micro or small organisation
- up to 35% if you are a medium-sized organisation
- up to 25% if you are a large organisation
Research organisations in your consortium can share up to 30-50% of the UK total eligible project costs.
