Bio, Food & Agro

The Bio, Food & Agro sector is one of the most essential sectors in the world, providing for millions in Europe. The biobased economy is one of the fastest growing in the world. The market for biobased products is expected to increase to 50 billion euro in 2030; a predicted growth of no less than 7 percent per year. Even so, the challenges in the sector increase nearly as rapidly as our understanding of its potential benefits does. Cost-competitiveness of biobased products in Europe is still not up to par with fossil-based alternatives. End-users often do not see the benefits of biobased products. And scaling up proves to be a challenge, both in technology and (inter)national policies.

PNO is involved in a number of projects in the sector. Our bio expertise lies in techno-economic viability, bio-refineries, fermentations and bio processes. In food, we excel at projects in innovative food ingredients and solutions, and safety and traceability of food systems. Our agro expertise lies in sustainable agricultural practices and new plant varieties and crop protection. Because PNO is linked within extensive European, national and regional networks, we can connect partners and set up consortia. Some examples of our projects: VALUEMAG aims to provide cutting-edge solutions for microalgae production and harvesting as well as scaling up new technologies of biomass transformation for integrated bio-refineries. Our AgriChemWhey H2020 Flagship project seeks to build a first-of-a kind, industrial-scale bio-refinery which will take by-products from the dairy processing industry.
